SLR DATA ANALYSIS AT THE ASI/CGS
The SLR data analysis has a relatively long history at the Matera Centro di Geodesia Spaziale (CGS). Started in 1984 with the on-site quality control, it is now a well established activity focused on the areas of tectonic plate motion, crustal deformation, post-glacial rebound and subsidence, Earth rotation and polar motion, time variations of the Earth’s gravitational field, center of mass of the total Earth system monitoring, International Terrestrial Reference System (ITRS) maintenance, satellite orbit determination.
The analysis products could be classified into two main types: standard and special
The standard are the basic products of the SLR analysis and contribute to the routinely monitoring of the terrestrial reference system through a set of coordinates and velocities of the worldwide network and the earth orientation parameters
The special are those products requiring specific investigation and not routinely produced. They can be grouped into the following areas:
-  terrestrial reference frame;
-  precise orbit determination (POD);
-  gravitational field;
-  geocenter;
-  intra-technique combination/comparison.

STANDARD PRODUCTS

ASI/CGS Cartesian coordinates and velocities
Geodetic solutions are routinely performed at the CGS and distributed to International Services for the determination and maintenance of the Terrestrial Reference Frame.
Accurate determinations of station position and motion are provided on a global scale using all the available SLR data from the worlwide network.

ASI/CGS Earth orientation parameters
The Earth Rotation Parameters (ERP) describe the orientation of the Earth Axis, the rotation of the Earth and their variations. The ERP connect the Celestial Reference Frame to the Terrestrial Reference Frame and the variations of the ERP are a good indicator of a variety of geophysical processes originating within the Earth. The CGS routinely produces estimations of the ERP in terms of polar motion and Length-Of-Day, those products are distributed to the International Earth Rotation Service.

SPECIAL PRODUCTS

ASI/CGS contribution to specific projects
The CGS is an official component of the International Laser Ranging Service (ILRS), as Associate Analysis Center, and of the International Earth Rotation and Reference System Service (IERS), as Combination Research Center. It is involved in international projects/campaigns together with worlwide analysis centers.

ASI/CGS miscellaneous solutions
The data collected from the SLR network contribute to the study of the Earth system, as a whole. Ad hoc analyses are made to derive time series of various geodetic parameters, i.e. low degree geopotential zonals, geocenter.
  • Time series of low-degree geopotential zonals and their secular drifts. Description and results
  • SLR weekly SSC/EOP, a technical description can be found here. The SINEX files are available on request.
  • Geocenter time series 1993-2003 (plots). Data are available on request.
